What is Merchant Navy?

The merchant navy is a collective name for the shipping industry, group of private companies transporting all forms of cargo from country to country, through sea vessels. This cargo can include anything such as Oil, Containers containing goods, bulk cargoes such as iron ore, coal or even passengers (through cruise ships). One better option is the “Deck Department” where you will become a Deck Officer, with the intention of getting promotion through the ranks to be Master/Captain of the ship. The actual work of a navy man involves navigating the ship, planning the ships routes, and conducting the cargo operations. Responsibility of cargo operations vary depending on the type of ships you work on, and the company you work for. Prior to commence your training ship, you have to decide which department you would like to begin your career.

The Trainee seaman can also earn approx. 12000 to 18,000 per month with prospects of becoming bonus (approx. salary 45,000). The salary scales differ in various companies and the salaries are tax free along with free boarding and lodging on ship during duty period. Companies also provide air passage from and to an airport, hotel booking or guest house accommodation and other expenses for joining and leaving ship. There are also other option is to join the Technical department such as “Engine Department”, where you can become a Marine Engineering Officer with the aim of become the Chief Engineer of the ship. The mechanical engineering job includes all kinds of machinery works including diesel engines and system and plant engineering as the ship is like a small town requiring electricity, water, sanitation, etc. They will be also learning how to maintain and fabricate components and machinery such as welding and lathe, etc.

Fresher Cadets will get payment during training. Unlike most general studies, where you pay to study, companies hire cadet to train them. In 2008/2009 cadets can get payment around 16,000 a year to study. I think it is a good stipend amount, considering your friends are paying to go to College or University!
As soon as completion of your training, you can earn a decent salary. As soon as you will leave college, you can expect a starting salary of INR 25,000, at the age of 20. As you progress through the ranks, salaries increase at a better rate, up to Captains and senior engineers receiving INR 50,000.
